It’s fairly easy to prevent child abuse. You just need to develop a culture that doesn’t make it possible for an adult to be alone in a room or vehicle with a child. The bishops have accomplished this, for the most part, even if it has made priests more distant from the faithful, and bishops far more distant from their priests. The distance is necessary though, due to where they have failed. The bishops, for decades, have not been proactive in preventing likely predators from entering the priesthood, or lay ministries with children. They still want to pretend that homosexuals are not more likely to become abusers, and so they only act once they have received accusations, which are often rather flimsy, but which have to be taken seriously, because they know they haven’t weeded out the “bad guys.”
